Founded in 1579, Vilnius University is one of the oldest and most famous schools of higher learning in Eastern Europe. King Stefan Batory presented an honorary letter on the occasion of the academy’s opening, while Pope Grigalius XIII issued a bull confirming the establishment of a Jesuit college at the university in 1570.
For over 400 years Vilnius University lived through rise and fall, closure and rebirth. Famous personages studied and worked at the university.
The Vilnius University ensemble is spread out throughout Old Town between Universiteto, Skapo, Pilies and Šv. Jono streets. The buildings were built at different times – from the 16th to the 19th centuries. The ensemble is hamoniously suited in Gothic, Renaissance, Baroque and Classical styles.
There are 13 interior courtyards in the ensemble. The interiors are worthy of notice. If you don’t think you’ll get lost, explore them on your own, but a guide would help you do this faster.
