According to the legend, Franciscan monks were tortured to death on the hill of the Tree Crosses.  Lithuanian pagans cut off the heads of seven Franciscans, and tied up the seven other ones by the crosses and let them go down the river saying, “Swim away with this idol you tell us to worship.”
In the 17th century, these monks were proclaimed as martyrs, and these crosses were built in honor of them.  However, scientists think that these crosses have been built on the occasion of granting the Magdeburg Rights following the example of many cities.
At first, the crosses were made of wood, later, in 1916; they were made from concrete according to the project by the architect Antanas Vivulskis.  The Soviet Government blew up the crosses in 1950.  They were rebuilt in 1989, right before getting back the independence of Lithuania.
The Three Crosses are one of the symbols of Vilnius.
