According to legend, Grand Duke Gediminas had a dream of an iron wolf hauling on a high hill after hunting in Šventaragis Valley, the site of the present-day Cathedral. A pagan priest interpreted the dream - the Duke would have to build on the spot a castle and found a city that would make Lithuania’s name famous throughout the world. Seven years after its establishment, Vilnius was granted an official crest depicting St. Christopher wading in water carrying on his shoulders the Child Jesus. The prior Iron Wolf remained though the alternate city symbol.
