Klaipėda is the third Lithuanian city by to the number of its inhabitants. About 203 thousand people live here. The city has numerous museums, galleries such as the Art Gallery, History Museum of Lithuania Minor, Blacksmith Museum of Lithuania Minor, and the Clock Museum. Klaipėda stands out from other cities of Lithuania with its old and rich history as well as its architecture characteristic of western European cities.

Summer on the water
Summer in the region of Klaipėda – is the most wonderful time for water travel and recreation. The specific environment of this region fulfills the needs of various water recreation enthusiasts. Those who like dynamic sailing will find joy in the frequently wavy Baltic Sea. Those who want quiet are offered calm boating in the Curonian Lagoon or in the local rivers. A water excursion – is the best opportunity to observe the incredible, contrasting seashore of the Curonian Lagoon, visit the shoreline’s historical and ethnographic places, or take a hike.
The Lithuanians themselves have just recently “discovered” the joys of water tourism. More frequently do they rent boat trips for various occasions, go sailing, get their own water transport vehicles. This is why service companies have increased. So there are plenty of choices.

Lithuania’s Maritime Museum
150 years ago in the most northern part of the Curonian Spit, Kopgalis, there was a sea defense fortress. Today the fortress houses the Lithuania’s Maritime Museum. There is also a dolphinarium, the only one on the eastern coast of the Baltic Sea. The museum aquarium contains about 40 types of fish found in the rivers and lakes of Lithuania, the Baltic Sea. In the open basins you will see many Baltic seals and penguins. If you walk from the Museum towards the old ferry, you can also visit the ethnographic fisherman’s house and see the old fishing vessels.

Dolphins’ therapy
The Lithuanian Sea Museum began to work with dolphin therapy in 2002. They’re being prepared for children sick with psychological and physical illnesses. This project has had positive results and a huge interest from the public, which is why it will continue. Usually autistic children (pathological introverts) are treated at the dolphinarium. The parents of ill children leave the dolphinarium believing that the joy, which the dolphins give, can slowly heal their kids.

Klaipėda’s beaches
Klaipėda residents and city guests like to relax the best in the northern beaches of the city: no need to waste time on the ferry, easy access. The northern Klaipėda beaches get renewed every year. This year the lifeguards will look entirely different – they’ll have new uniforms. The rescue station will have special gear, a cutter, and water as well as sand motorcycles.

Neringa – the sunniest
The Curonian Spit is listed as a seashore climate zone, which is heavily influenced by the Baltic Sea. Throughout the year the medium sunshine is 1,982 hours, or 39% of possible sunshine length. The Curonian Spit has the sunniest days in Lithuania. Westerly and southerly winds take priority. Every year there occur very strong, stormy winds, especially in fall. The warmth from the sea is stronger in the Curonian Spit than in other Lithuanian regions. The Curonian Spit air is very humid, lessening in the spring. Frequently fog hovers. During the year the Spit gets 643 mm of rainfall. Rainy days throughout the year average 170-180, unfortunately mostly in the summer.
